Wall Bait, by Duke Riley, is an assemblage of fishing lures. These lures are created from plastic debris that Riley finds washed up on beaches. He then paints them and, in some cases, attaches a hook. The variety of the debris is impressive, from crinkle fries to combs to syringes, which is the lesson Duke wishes to impart upon the viewer, as he reclaims the trash and converts it into art, saving the oceans one faux lure at a time.
The Alluring colorway features a matte black background, as Duke uses in his artworks, to allow the myriad of lure colors to pop. Printed on chrome Mylar, the vivid colors become metallic, and elements like the hooks and bike reflectors look incredibly realistic.
Duke Riley received his BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and his MFA from Pratt Institute. Riley is fascinated by maritime history and events around urban waterways. His signature style interweaves historical and contemporary events with elements of folklore and myth to create allegorical histories. His re-imagined narratives comment on a range of issues from the cultural impact of over development and environmental destruction of waterfront communities to contradictions within political ideologies and the role of the artist in society.
