Illustrator and lifestyle entrepreneur Alexa Pulitzer's New Orleans Toile: Backstreets is a tribute to the vibrant soul and culture of the Big Easy. From the historical and contemporary sounds that emanate from the gloriously atrophied Preservation Hall and the original Pimm's Cup still served at the Napolean House, New Orleans stands the test of time. Our Indigo colorway is a tribute to the enslaved Africans brought to New Orleans for their expertise in growing and processing indigo, which was the region's primary crop before the introduction of sugar. Before this, Native Americans in the area used wild false indigo, a species of the genus Baptisia, to dye garments in honor of water and its importance in their survival. The lighter, indigo-blue tea-stained background sets off the dark blue linework.
As a teen, Alexa Pulitzer accompanied her father on design and buying trips to Lake Como, Italy, for her family’s companies. After creating a collection of postcards to thank her Italian employers, Alexa was urged to establish her renowned stationery company. Alexa was selected to design the logo for New Orleans’ 300th Anniversary in 2018 and serves as a goodwill ambassador to the city of New Orleans, where she forever incorporates her roots of classic Italian aesthetic with her hometown joie de vivre and playful sophistication into her artistry and daily life.
