On a trip to Japan, designer Jon Sherman became obsessed with shou sugi ban, the ancient Japanese wood preservation technique using fire. The finish depends on the extent of the flame exposure and shimmers with an alligator skin texture. To create Charred Cedar, we blowtorched cedar planks, photographed them, and built the images into a digitally printed wallpaper.
The wood surface is carbonized black to create a water and pest-resistant surface, so Burnt was a natural name for the colorway.
Flavor Paper founder and creative director Jon Sherman is a self-trained artist and designer whose work has been featured in numerous museums, books, and projects.
